The VMCU representative Under 21 side took on the VCCL on Sunday February 9 at Browne Reserve Wendouree (Ballarat).
In what turned out to be a tight and low scoring game, the VMCU were victorious.
The VMCU struggled for a side managing just to have enough players to take the field as late as Friday before the game.
Lachie Brown (DDCA) was made captain and he lost the toss with VCCL electing to bat. The opening bowlers were Riley Beer (VTCA) and Jay Jhamb (DDCA), with both getting some movement off the deck.
The outfield was fast so the VCCL got off to a good start but in the 8th over the VCCL lost its first wicket when Jhamb had their number 2 bat caught by Jordan McDonnell (DDCA).
The next wicket fell in the following over with another catch (O’Brien) off Beer.
The following over had another wicket when the other opener was adjudged LBW to Jhamb.
Two more overs and the 4th wicket went down with another catch by Chris Williams (RDCA) who would take two for the match.
So, after 12 overs the VCCL were 4/38.
A little bit of consolidation ensured the scoring rate continued but in the 18th over Josh Nevett (ECA) bowled their 5th wicket with the score on 62.
2 more overs had the 6th wicket with Nevett again taking this, then 3 overs later Bryce Dinger (DDCA) took the 7th wicket.
So, at drinks in the 25th over the VCCL were 7/94.
More consolidation by VCCL had the score pass 100 in the 27th over but in the 32nd over Flynn McGaw (DDCA) took the 8th wicket.
The 9th wicket fell in the 36th over when McGaw bowled the VCCL’s top scorer and then the 37th over the innings was closed when Beer took the last wicket, bowled.
So, the VCCL were all out for 136 best was Jhamb 3/22, McGaw 2/16, Nevett 2/18 and Beer 2/22.
The VMCU opened with Declan O’Brien (VTCA) and Jordan McDonnell (DDCA). McDonnell fell in the 2nd over and the in the 5th over Shaun McAndrew (VTCA) lost his wicket and the score was 2/19 in a jittery start.
Lachie Browne would come in next, however, he was struck on the helmet and retired hurt, as a precautionary measure. The luncheon break was taken in the 7th over.
Chris Williams (RDCA) would join O’Brien after the luncheon break and a quick fire 14 by him bought the score to 3/40 when he was bowled.
Then Jay Jhamb (DDCA) went into bat and it would be this pair of Jhamb and O’Brien which would see the score reach 98 before O’Brien would lose his wicket after a well-made 47 in the 27 over.
Unfortunately, in the next over, Jhamb would also go at a score of 102 with another good score of 29.
The VMCU would lose Flynn McGaw (DDCA) and the score was then 6/104. The VMCU were tottering under the pressure from the VCCL bowlers who were bowling well in the conditions.
At this point Lachie Brown decided he was well enough to come back into bat.
Joel Mitchener (WRJCA) was next to go with the score on 110 then in the next over would see the VMCU 9/123 when Brown departed.
Thus needing 14 to get with 1 wicket in hand the 10th batter Bryce Dinger (DDCA) and 11th batter Josh Nevett (ECA) set out to try and win the game.
Dinger would be dropped by an attempted diving catch at short cover making things tense. Dinger would make 17 runs but it would be Nevett with a clip off his toes to see the ball reach the boundary to bring up a stirring win by the VMCU players
The VMCU would like to thank Craig Slocombe and Neil Shaw for assisting with team manager duties on the day and the umpire in Allan Taylor.
To all the players a big thank you for turning up it is greatly appreciated.
Lastly a thank for the VCCL and the Wendouree CC for hosting the day.
Hopefully next season we can continue this tradition.
